Join us as we embark on this transformative journey towards a healthier, happier, and more fulfilling partnership.

Our therapists use evidenced-based modalities to get to the root of the problem in a way that helps you learn new skills and create healthier patterns. We will teach you how to use appropriate boundaries, become experts at empathizing, assert your needs and wants with wisdom, and create attachment repair with ease. When we are healthy for ourselves and do our inner work, are we able to offer the same healing and safety to others. And when couples learn to do this for both themselves and one another, the dynamic is literally life-changing.
Here’s What to Expect in Couples Therapy for Lesbian Couples, Thruples and Polycules
By engaging in couples therapy tailored for lesbian couples, throuples, and polycules you can expect to gain valuable insights and tools that will help you navigate your relationship’s complexities and build a more fulfilling, loving partnership.
Taking the time to invest in your relationship allows us to feel both the safety and connections we most deeply desire, but it can also leave us feeling confident and proud. Growing as a relationship being is a very important step in our queer journey, especially because we need to heal from the developmental trauma and years in the closet. But as we step into relationships as capable, we learn to rest in the trust we have for ourselves and our partners.
- Safe and Inclusive Environment: Our therapists prioritize creating a welcoming and non-judgmental space where you and your partner can openly discuss your concerns, challenges, and aspirations without fear of discrimination or bias.
- Understanding Unique Challenges: We acknowledge that same-sex relationships face distinct challenges that may not be present in heterosexual relationships. Our therapists are experienced in addressing these unique aspects, such as societal pressures, family dynamics, and navigating gender roles within the relationship.
- Tailored Approach: Every couple is unique, and our therapists will work closely with you to develop a customized plan that addresses your specific needs and goals. This may include exploring communication styles, addressing trust issues, or fostering emotional intimacy.
- Effective Communication Techniques: One of the primary focuses in couples therapy is to improve communication between partners. Our therapists will help you develop active listening skills, express your feelings clearly, and approach difficult conversations with empathy and understanding.
- Conflict Resolution Strategies: Disagreements and conflicts are inevitable in any relationship. Our therapists will equip you with practical tools and techniques to resolve conflicts in a healthy and constructive manner, ultimately strengthening your bond.
- Personal Growth and Self-Awareness: Couples therapy is not just about improving your relationship; it’s also an opportunity for personal growth. Our therapists will encourage you to explore your own thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, helping you develop a deeper understanding of yourself and how you relate to your partner.
- Emphasis on Emotional Connection: Healthy emotional intimacy is a vital component of a strong and healthy relationship. Our therapists will guide you in deepening the emotional connection with your partner by fostering trust, vulnerability, and empathy.
- Ongoing Support: Couples therapy is an ongoing process, and our therapists are committed to providing the support you need throughout your journey. We encourage open lines of communication and will work with you to adapt the therapy as your relationship evolves.

Is couples therapy right for us? Are there signs that my partner and I need to go to therapy together?
Therapy can address many things like built-up resentments, codependence, jealously, poor communications, argumentation, infidelity, or simply learning how to adapt to a new change in your dynamic. If you have a desire to strengthen your relationship or need to address serious challenges, therapy is a great option for you.
How does iAmClinic Understand the unique challenges of Lesbian couples?
We are a team of queer therapist who not only come with professional training, but personal experience. We have been working with lesbain couples since 2010 and have had the opportunity to become very skilled at knowing your unique struggles and offering precise fixes. Because we only work within the queer community, we know what to listen for, common hurdles, and the shortest routes when it comes to making lesbian relationships work. In our work, you don’t have to teach us about your reality. Chances are, we’ve experienced it ourselves.
What is iAmClinic’s approach to couples therapy, and how does that differentiate from other LGBTQIA+ therapists?
iAmClinic uses a very particular model where we identify very particular patterns in your relationships as the means to pinpoint the root cause of your challenges. Our modalities don’t just allow us to help you change behaviors and inspire new patterns, but we also look deeper to the wounds that motivate your repeating interactions. As we heal from those wounds in therapy, we develop new skills, of course, but you also learn what it feels like to be in a safe and trustworthy relationship. On this deeper level, this is where the magic happens.
What does success look like in lesbian couples therapy?
Success is defined by our clients. We want you to have full reign over your life, your emotions, and your relationships. As queer and trans therapists, we know what it means to have someone else define your life for you. At iAmClinic, we work with you to define your version of success. When you leave our office for the last time, we want you to be proud who you are and how healthy your relationship is.
Will I be in every session together with my partner, or will there be 1-on1 sessions as well?
Therapy is a journey and this means it can take a variety of courses. Typically in couples, throuples, or polycule therapy we like to keep you all together. Doing so allows us to address difficulties with vulnerability, trust, and communications. If you would like one-on-one sessions, let us know and we can find the right balance!
How do you handle mixed orientation relationships?
Mixed orientation relationships are VERY safe at iAmClinic. We have been working with MORs (Mixed Orientation Relationships) since 2010 and have grown rather successful at helping them find their resolutions. We know that there are several directions a MOR can take, so we leave every option on the table. We discuss what direction and choices are right for you and we help you create the path that gets you there with ease. To do so successfully, we take time to fully understand your context, your conflicting urges, and what makes sense for the ways your internal and external worlds meet.
What are the chances that my partner and I figure out we’re not right for each other?
Although we’d like to quote a piece of psychological research to help you understand the probability of making it work; however, every relationship is different. If reaching a painful decision in therapy is a fear of yours, we want you to tell us about that. Figuring out if you’re not in the right relationship can be very scary and we want to help you talk about that fear. Sharing this with your therapist can be very illuminating, and may actually reach your goal in therapy.
Are there signs that my partner and I are a “bad fit” Is there such thing as a “bad fit”?
The question of compatibility is always a big one. Many people swim in confusion, wondering if their relationships suffer because of personality differences or because their wounding is too deep. We might see patterns in one relationship affect another, allowing us to swim in shame thinking, “Will I ever be healthy enough to make love work?” Compatibility is one thing, but oftentimes relationships are a bit more complex than simply being a “bad fit.”
Should we be in therapy if the relationship is less than 6 months old?
Queer therapy gets to be unique and needs-based. There are heteronormative standards for when therapy is appropriate and for what challenges. We believe, however, that the lesbian and queer journeys are unique and we must consider our context- from closeted to coming out. It is also very hard to find a partner- our pools are a lot smaller than a cisgender, heteosexual’s dating pool. So if you have found someone worth fighting for, it is never too early to give it all you’ve got.
